Eye Health and Elder Care in Santa Rosa CA: Why It’s So Important!

For those of us whose vision is strong, whether you need corrective lenses or not, it can be easy to take your sight for granted.  Yet for those whose vision is beginning to decline, or fail, it can be an unnerving and even downright frightening.  When it comes to elder care, helping to keep elderly patients’ eyes in good health is crucial to safety and happiness at home.Elder Care Santa Rosa CA

April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, so it’s a good time to get your elderly loved one to the eye doctor to have her vision checked.

What about if my mother doesn’t show any signs of vision problems?

Just because your mother might not be showing signs that she has vision problems, that doesn’t mean she isn’t dealing with some underlying issues that could become more severe over time.  Cataracts often begin to affect the eyes long before we can even notice their impact.

Like most health related problems, the earlier that they are spotted or detected, the more options are available to help treat them.  Glaucoma, astigmatism, and cataracts are the most common eye related health issues that affect elderly individuals.  It doesn’t matter if your loved one relies on elderly home care or not; eye health is so important for so many reasons.

For one thing, when you have trouble seeing clearly, items left in your path can become dangerous tripping hazards.  Second, depth perception is affected and that can lead to a number of potential problems, especially injuries.  Third, when you can’t see clearly, it can affect your emotional health as well, causing you to not want to do certain things that you were used to doing, or to withdraw from people and activities that were once enjoyable.

Eye health is vitally important for so many ways that it is one of the more important components, or aspects, or elder care that should never be overlooked.  If you know an elderly individual, such a parent or grandparent, or a friend or neighbor, and they haven’t had their eyesight checked in a long time, then recommend that they make an appointment as soon as possible.

They may state that their eyesight and eye health are fine, but gently remind them that preventive elder care is one of the keys to continued health, happiness, and a long and full life.  You’ll feel better and so will they.
