February is American
Heart Month!
|
The month of
February is
designated as
American Heart Month
and there is no
better time to get
your heart in
check. Consider
these statistics:
- Heart disease is
the #1 killer of all
Americans and those
over age 65.
- The risk of
heart failure
increases with age,
doubling after age
75 and doubling
again after age 85.
- Estimates for
the year 2006 for
people in the U.S.
are as follows:
- High blood
pressure:
73,600,000
- Coronary
Heart Disease:
17,600,000
- Stroke:
6,400,000
- Heart
Failure:
5,800,000
- Heart disease
kills 910,000
Americans annually
Here are some tips
to improve overall
wellness and lower
the risk of heart
disease:
- Understand the
risk factors for
heart disease,
including high blood
pressure, high
cholesterol and
weight. See your
primary care
physician on a
regular basis.
- One of the
easiest ways to
monitor one's
heart health is
through in-home
blood pressure
monitoring.
- Physical
activity helps to
maintain an ideal
weight, reduce
stress and create a
stronger heart.
- Get a
minimum of 30
minutes of
moderate
exercise at
least 5 days a
week.
- Make small
changes in your
daily routine,
such as taking
the stairs
instead of the
elevator, and
parking farther
away from the
store.
- Diets that are
well balanced and
low in cholesterol,
salt and fat are key
to preventing heart
disease.
- A diet
focused on
fruits,
vegetables,
whole grains and
low-fat dairy
products help
maintain a
healthy heart.
- Shake the
salt habit; try
to limit your
daily intake of
sodium to 2300
mg.
- Remember
that only 5%
of the salt
in our diets
come from
salt
shakers; the
majority comes
from
processed
and
restaurant
foods.
- Check
your
labels! One
glass of V8
vegetable
juice has
over 1000 mg
by itself!
-
Processed
snack foods
and deli
meats are
all high in
sodium.
- Other
salt
varieties to
avoid:
ketchup,
mustard,
soysauce,
pickes and
olives.
- Take vitamins.
Omega-3 fatty acids,
found in fish and
flax oil, help
protect the heart
and lower blood
pressure. There is
growing research
that Vitamin D helps
in maintaining a
healthy heart.
It's a new
year.....take care
of yourself and make
2010 the healthiest
ever!

Caregiver
Spotlight: Connie Kint
|
|
Connie,
after attending school in
Honolulu, Hawaii, moved to
California in 1989. Because
of her desire to "make a
positive difference", her choice
to enter into caregiving has
proven to be the right
one. Connie has been with AYS
going on 3 years, and is always
up for the most difficult
tasks. Both her clients and the
staff at AYS appreciate her hard
work and her kind demeanor, as
evidenced by the numerous
compliments we receive. When
Connie is not providing
exceptional care, she loves to
spend her time hiking
throughout Sonoma County. We
feel fortunate to have Connie
working with us, and look
forward to many years to come.
Thank you, Connie!
