Importance of Good Nutrition As We Age

Hi, it’s Lucy Andrews, home care nurse and owner, “At Your Service Home Care” in Santa Rosa, CA. Today we’re going to talk a little bit about nutrition. Nutrition as we age is so very important for so many reasons. Oftentimes, as we age we struggle to keep weight on, we struggle to keep the right and proper nutrition in our bodies. Today we’re going to give you three tips that will help when you’re concerned about your loved one’s nutrition.

The first is get regular dental checkups. It is so hard to eat, if you’ve ever had a toothache you understand how very painful it can be and you just don’t want to eat. Make sure that your loved one has regular dental check-ups. If they have Alzheimer’s or dementia, make sure that you find a dentist that can work with somebody that has this disease process going on.

The second thing is to make sure that you offer your loved one, small, frequent meals. As we age, sometimes our stomach shrinks and we’re just not as hungry to have three large meals throughout the day. Instead, it’s better to have small, frequent meals. So if you’re going off to work and your loved one is at home make sure they have a variety of snacks that they can munch on throughout the day.

Thirdly, it’s about the kinds of food that we eat. Make sure that they get in all the things they want to eat and get a little protein in there too. It’s really important that we gear our nutrition to what our loved one is wanting to eat that particular day, it’s really important. So make sure that you have great nutritious snacks, that you get regular dental check-ups, and if you can’t prepare those snacks and meals by yourself it’s a great time to have a home care aide come who can help with meal preparation and make sure that your loved one is getting the nutrition that they need everyday.

There’s the tip of the day. It’s Lucy Andrews, “At Your Service Home Care”, signing off.
